The Spotlight Initiative Incorporated
Free, evidence-based platforms on the issues that matter to communities across Australia. No paywalls. No spin. Just the data, made accessible.
See our work ↓Our mission
The data that shapes your life has always existed. We make it free, findable, and impossible to ignore.
Every claim is sourced. Every dataset is public record. We don't speculate — we show what the evidence says.
We use AI to cross-reference datasets and surface patterns at scale — but every finding is verified by humans before it goes public.
No paywalls. No subscriptions. No advertising. Public interest information belongs to the public — full stop.
We focus on issues that directly affect Australian communities — health, politics, sport, and the systems that shape daily life.
Our platforms
Each platform shines a light on a different area where Australians deserve better information.
The Albury-Wodonga hospital redevelopment is a $558M project that — by the government's own admission — will not deliver the single-site hospital the community was promised. CHART maps what was promised, what's being built, and what the evidence actually says.
Visit CHART →Australia's biggest corporations spend millions shaping public opinion — often without the public knowing. Corporate Camouflage cross-references what companies say against what the public record shows.
Visit Corporate Camouflage →There are an estimated 2,200 lobbyists with access to Parliament House. The official register lists fewer than 600. Hidden Influence maps who is really influencing Australian policy — and whether the outcomes serve the public.
Australia has one of the highest per-capita gambling loss rates in the world. The Odds maps the money, the sponsorships, the advertising saturation, and the lobbying spend against reform — and what it means for young Australians.
Our position
We want to be clear about what we stand for, and what we don't.
About us
The Spotlight Initiative is an Australian not-for-profit incorporated association. We were founded on a simple belief: the public deserves the same quality of information that governments and corporations use to make decisions about their lives.
We use AI and publicly available data to do something AI rarely does in public life — serve the public interest rather than a commercial one. We cross-reference massive public datasets, surface patterns, and present complex civic information in a way that anyone can understand.
Every platform is free. Every claim is sourced. Every dataset is public record. We shine the light. The community decides what to do with what it sees.
