Our mission

What we stand for

The data that shapes your life has always existed. We make it free, findable, and impossible to ignore.

Evidence-based

Every claim is sourced. Every dataset is public record. We don't speculate — we show what the evidence says.

Technology-driven, human-verified

We use AI to cross-reference datasets and surface patterns at scale — but every finding is verified by humans before it goes public.

Freely accessible

No paywalls. No subscriptions. No advertising. Public interest information belongs to the public — full stop.

For Australians

We focus on issues that directly affect Australian communities — health, politics, sport, and the systems that shape daily life.

Our platforms

The work

Each platform shines a light on a different area where Australians deserve better information.

CHART
Cross-Border Health Advocacy, Research & Transparency

The Albury-Wodonga hospital redevelopment is a $558M project that — by the government's own admission — will not deliver the single-site hospital the community was promised. CHART maps what was promised, what's being built, and what the evidence actually says.

EXPOSING CORPORATE CAMOUFLAGE
Corporate Camouflage
Corporate transparency & public conduct

Australia's biggest corporations spend millions shaping public opinion — often without the public knowing. Corporate Camouflage cross-references what companies say against what the public record shows.

HIDDEN INFLUENCE
Hidden Influence
Lobbying, donations & political influence

There are an estimated 2,200 lobbyists with access to Parliament House. The official register lists fewer than 600. Hidden Influence maps who is really influencing Australian policy — and whether the outcomes serve the public.

Researching
THE ODDS
The Odds
Gambling industry, sport & Australian youth

Australia has one of the highest per-capita gambling loss rates in the world. The Odds maps the money, the sponsorships, the advertising saturation, and the lobbying spend against reform — and what it means for young Australians.

Our position

What Spotlight Is — and Isn't

We want to be clear about what we stand for, and what we don't.

What Spotlight Is
  • A not-for-profit research and public interest initiative
  • Committed to evidence, accuracy, and transparency
  • Focused on making complex public information accessible to everyone
  • Asking questions that institutions should already be answering publicly
  • A forum for community voices and public interest perspectives
  • Using AI as a tool for research — not to replace human judgement
  • Free, forever — no advertising, no subscriptions, no agenda
What Spotlight Is Not
  • Not a protest group or activist organisation
  • Not affiliated with any political party or movement
  • Not opposed to any government, institution, or corporation in principle
  • Not a legal, medical, or financial advisory service
  • Not speaking on behalf of any individual, complaint, or case
  • Not funded by or beholden to any organisation with a stake in our findings
  • Not here to tell you what to think — just data to help you make decisions

About us

Who we are

The Spotlight Initiative is an Australian not-for-profit incorporated association. We were founded on a simple belief: the public deserves the same quality of information that governments and corporations use to make decisions about their lives.

We use AI and publicly available data to do something AI rarely does in public life — serve the public interest rather than a commercial one. We cross-reference massive public datasets, surface patterns, and present complex civic information in a way that anyone can understand.

Every platform is free. Every claim is sourced. Every dataset is public record. We shine the light. The community decides what to do with what it sees.
